| General characteristics |
The White Bengal tiger is very easy to recognise with it’s striking pale coat and strong black stripes. They are not a separate sub-species or a "snow tiger" but a colour variant resulting from a recessive gene, which both parents must carry. White tigers are extremely rare in the wild. A white cub naturally results in about 1 in 10,000 births. There are only around 100 White tigers alive, today, in captivity. They can trace their ancestry back to a cub called Mohan captured in India in the 1950’s.
Bengal tiger males can reach up to 3.1m in body length and weigh 260kg, the females are slightly smaller, reaching up to 2.8m in length and 160kg.
Like all tigers they are built for hunting. They have long hindlimbs for jumping, heavily muscled shoulders and forelimbs and long, sharp, retractile claws. They rely on dense cover to allow them to stalk within 20m of their targeted prey, which is why they are not found in open habitats. They then rush their victim and, if successful, kill it with a suffocating bite to the throat. Tigers are not social animals, like lions, instead they remain in small family groups of mother and young. Both male and female tigers maintain territories, they do this by marking the boundaries with scent and scratching trees. Another animal can recognise which animal has passed by due to the smell. Males can also tell how receptive the females are for mating. |
